Working in the Schools (WITS)

WITS believes that literacy is the foundation on which all other learning develops. WITS empowers Chicago elementary students to discover themselves through reading while developing foundational literacy skills.

Over 34 years, WITS has grown to be the largest and most consistent provider of literacy enrichment and corporate programming in Chicago elementary schools, leveraging more than 500 mentors, supporting 100 teachers, and serving over 4,200 students yearly. Through its literacy-based student mentorship model, WITS pairs students with dedicated mentors who provide consistent, weekly one-on-one reading support throughout the school year. WITS’ book-granting programs equip teachers with funding to create inclusive classroom libraries and provide students with personalized collections of books to take home for the summer.
