Tutoring Chicago

For 53 years Tutoring Chicago has dedicated its mission to empowering economically disadvantaged children through education.

With a solid history behind us and an even-stronger future ahead, we offer our constituents the stability of a trustworthy organization. Since beginning in 1965 as Cabrini Green Tutoring Program by a group of dedicated Montgomery Ward employees, the organization has helped thousands of students in elementary school grow both personally and academically through weekly one-to-one tutoring sessions with well-educated adult volunteers. In June 1990, Tutoring Chicago became incorporated as a private non-profit organization serving the youth of Cabrini Green.

Today, Tutoring Chicago serves over 800 youth from low income families all around the Chicago area, with an outlook to serve even more. Since 2007, Tutoring Chicago has operated out of St. Vincent de Paul Center at Halsted and Webster. In 2011, the program opened a second location at Goethe Elementary School in Logan Square and in 2016 we opened a third location at Hope Institute Learning Academy. This fall a fourth location was opened at Kozminski School in Hyde Park.

Tutoring Chicago provides free one-to-one tutoring for economically disadvantaged students. Each week, we bring over 800 trained and well-educated adult volunteers directly to our child-friendly centers to provide supplemental educational services along with developmental experiences and relationships for children in grade one through six.

Although there is no single solution to the many challenges faced by children growing up in poverty, Tutoring Chicago believes that one of the first steps is to develop a foundation that will propel them towards young adult success and life-long learning.
